Brighthelm houses 10, 11 and 12 currently have no wired or wireless connections due to a network fault.
IT Services staff have traced the problem to a faulty network switch and are currently in the process of replacing it. IT Services apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused.
UPDATE: 22 Oct 2014 - 1:36pm
Following testing, IT Services staff have determined that lack of connectivity in Brighthelm houses 10, 11 and 12 is not after all due to a faulty network switch but due to the fibre-optic cable connecting this switch to the zone switch in Park Village being broken.
IT Services apologise for the inconvenience caused and are contacting a suitable contractor to arrange to have the faulty fibre-optic cable tested and repaired as soon as possible.
UPDATE: 22 Oct 2014 - 2:58pm
The fibre contractors are investigating the connectivity problems in Brighthelm 10, 11 and 12 and will be returning to campus tomorrow morning (Thursday 23 October) with specialist equipment to test it further.
IT Services apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused.
UPDATE: 24 Oct 2014 - 12:41pm
Specialist contractors visited Brighthelm on the morning of Thursday 23 October and have reported that a complete replacement of the fibre-optic cable is required. An order has been placed with the contractor and they will liaise with Sussex Estates and Facilities (SEF) to schedule and carry out the repair. IT Services will continue to monitor the progress with both the contractor and SEF
We apologise for the inconvenience that this unexpected cable fault is causing.
UPDATE: 28 Oct 2014 - 4:29pm
We've been working with specialist contractors and making good progress to restore internet access to Brighthelm 10, 11 and 12. The damaged fibre-optic cable has now been replaced and we expect all of the work to be completed on Wednesday 29 October.
The contractors have gone to some lengths to replace the faulty connection, in some cases having to excavate to gain access to underground ducting. But the work has gone well and affected residents should be reconnected sometime tomorrow.
