File system performance

We are continuing to monitor system performance. Over the last few days, there have been frequent short interruptions in access to the central file systems which have made it difficult for some staff to work steadily.

The interruptions have been traced to a particularly heavy demand for file access on a number of the courses that are running over the summer. Some of the activity on the file system this week has been much higher than average for the time of year.

During the main academic year, special file storage arrangements are made for users who require more intensive resources and we are working on a way to extend a similar facility to summer students in order to address this problem.
