Computer squatters

Since last term, we've installed over 100 new PCs in the Library. But despite the extra numbers, there will still be competition for computing facilities at the busiest times and lately the problem has been made worse by a new breed...

The lesser-spotted PC squatter

Habitat
Mainly restricted to the Library but sometimes strikes in Pevensey and other cluster rooms.

Behaviour
After finding a free PC, the typical squatter marks their territory with coat, scarf and belongings before disappearing for extended periods of time.

Please be considerate to the needs of others and remember that the University's resources have to be shared to be of the most benefit. If you're not going to be using a computer for a while, log out and give others the chance.

Ten minute rule
Like all of the computers in cluster rooms on the campus, there are automatic routines in place to log out inactive users.

If you're logged in to a computer in the Library but not using it:

  • the monitor will go on to standby after 10 minutes
  • and you will be logged out 10 minutes after that
