Wi-fi improvements

In the last few days, significant improvements have been made to the eduroam wi-fi access on the campus.

At the start of February, IT Services staff completed the installation of new wi-fi controllers, enabling the network to carry a far greater number of connections. The biggest improvements will be felt in the Library which is one of the most popular locations for wireless access. Users should also notice that the service is much more stable than it has been for the first part of the year.

The controllers are part of the infrastructure that will provide for a new wave of wi-fi access across the campus. In the central locations, capacity will soon be doubled with 200 access points planned for lecture rooms, teaching labs and social spaces. Meanwhile, over 400 wi-fi points are being readied for installation in the campus residences.

These developments have been made possible by a £1.3 million fund announced last year to improve the IT facilities for students. The investment, made in response to views expressed in the 2011 National Student Survey, is leading to a dramatic growth in the numbers of computers and wi-fi connections available to students.
