Abstract: Managing datacentre networks is hard. Operators must be able to detect, localise
and troubleshoot anomalies at any location in the network and any layer in the
network stack. In this talk, I will touch upon three techniques within the scope
of measurement, troubleshooting and transport protocol enhancement that are
essential for effectively managing datacentres and maintaining high performance.
First, I will talk about a TCP variant called TCPRand that addresses an anomaly
called TCP outcast problem. In the second topic, I will introduce CherryPick, a
mechanism to help network debugging by keeping track of trajectories of every
packet in the software-defined datacentre network. Finally, I will introduce
FineComb, a latency measurement data structure that provides high-resolution
end-to-end delays in datacentre networks.

Bio: Myungjin Lee is a Lecturer and Chancellor's Fellow in the School of
Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. His main research area is computer
networks. Particular topics of interest include datacentre networks,
software-defined networking and scalable network functions. He holds a Ph.D. in
Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University. He obtained a
Master's degree in Computer Science from KAIST and a B.E. degree in Electronic
and Electrical Engineering from Kyungpook National University, both based in
South Korea. He has six years of experience in the industry.
