Look out for fraudulent emails requesting money

Posted: Fri 1 Mar 2019, 3:55pm.

You might receive an email, apparently from a senior member of staff at Sussex, who urgently needs you to pay for something. This is a common email scam that’s currently targeting members of the University.

The criminals behind the scam will look on the website for the name of a member of staff and then create a fake email account in their name. When you receive the message, the name will be right but if you check the email address it won’t end in @sussex.ac.uk (it might be @gmail.com or @outlook.com)

These clever messages will try to trick you into sending payment. The IT Service Desk has received call from several members of the University who have been targeted by this scam.

PLEASE TAKE CARE WITH ANY EMAIL THAT REQUESTS PAYMENT, even if appears to come from a senior colleague. Find another way to verify that this is a genuine message.
