Questions and answers

Can I find out how many words there are in my essay?

In Microsoft Word the number of words in your document is displayed on the status bar at the bottom left of the workspace.

To include text in footnotes, endnotes and text boxes in the word count:

  1. From the Review tab, in the Proofing group, click Word Count.
  2. In the Word Count dialog box, select the Include textboxes, footnotes and endnotes check box

See FAQ 2595 for instructions on automatically inserting a word count into your document.

  • Included in Word Count
    • Automatic Table of Contents
    • Bibliography
    • Captions, including the label
    • Table of Figures, Tables or pictures
  • Word count will work on just the selected area. Select the area and then go to Review, Word count to view for just the selected areas.
