Why can't I open one of my files or directories?

The commands described below need to be entered while logged in to the Unix server.   Normally you'll see a prompt ending with $ when the command interpreter (or shell) is ready for another command.

Run the command

in your directory. Check the spelling of the file name and whether it is in upper- or lowercase or even a mixture of both. UNIX is case sensitive and names must be typed correctly.

Check also whether the access permissions on the file are correct, using the command

ls -l
