Can I read my university email using an iPhone?

This information is being updated following the migration of staff email to the cloud. For the latest setup instructions, please see our email migration page.

The iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch can connect to the University's mail system to allow you to read or send e-mail.

To get the best functionality from your email, you should connect to an Exchange server.  However, this requires that you put a passcode on your device if you don't already have one.  This is to protect your emails.

Configuring your email should be straightforward as most devices can configure it automatically.

  • From your Settings, choose Mail, Contacts and Calendars and then Add Account.
  • Choose Exchange.

  • Enter your full email address (e.g. ano23@sussex.ac.uk) and your password.  The description is optional.
  • Click Next.
  • On the next screen, enter your full email address in username (e.g. ano23@sussex.ac.uk)
  • You can add the server which is outlook.office365.com for students and exchange.sussex.ac.uk for staff.  You should not have to add the domain, but if you experience problems you can put it in as ad_us

  • On the following screen, you can make sure that your calendars, contact and mail are synced to your device.
  • You will then be asked to set a passcode for your device if you have not done so already.
