The University has a number of AEDs across campus, and a list of specific locations can be found on the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Team’s website.
Research from health charity St John Ambulance shows that 25% of UK adults have experienced a cardiac arrest incident in some way, either as a first aider, bystander or patient. With 15% of cardiac arrest incidents occurring in the workplace, access to defibrilators is critical.
The University has purchased a new AED which is available at the Falmer Sports Complex, and this can be found in a green external box located by the main entrance to the building. This AED can be accessed by calling 999 and stating the box location. The operator will then provide you with the access code. You don’t need to be trained in using AEDs, as they talk you through the process of using them as you go.
First aid kits are also provided across campus, which can be used by anyone in need of first aid, or by Local First Aiders (LFAs) when supporting others. Most recently, with the introduction of Martyn’s Law, trauma kits have been provided to the University’s Mobile First Aid Service (MFAS) and the Security Team to deal with cases of severe physical trauma, such as deep wounds and heavy bleeding.
If you have been considering volunteering as a LFA, please speak with your line manager in the first instance and then contact healthsafety@sussex.ac.uk to book onto training. Once qualified you will be included on the central first aider register so that you can be contacted for support during a first aid incident.
If you have any queries about AEDs or first aid, please contact healthsafety@sussex.ac.uk .
