Project management for researchers (online)
Wednesday 14 October 14:00 until 17:00
Online
Speaker: Dr Joanna Young (Scientific Editing Company)
Part of the series: ECR Development Series
Effective project management is crucial for researchers at all stages of their careers. This intensive short course is designed for postdocs seeking to improve their project management skills and offers a comprehensive framework for initiating, planning, designing and executing research projects effectively.
The course starts by outlining the different stages of project management, guiding participants on how to set clear objectives and establish a solid foundation for their research projects. From there, we move on to the planning and designing stage, where researchers learn to map out their projects in detail. Time management is a key component of the workshop, with strategies and techniques to help researchers prioritise tasks, set realistic deadlines and maintain a productive research workflow. Recognising the unpredictable nature of research, the course also covers risk assessment, preparing participants to identify potential pitfalls and develop contingency plans to mitigate risks.
A section of the session focusses on communication, especially in the context of interacting with stakeholders. In addition to traditional project management skills, the course introduces participants to a selection of relevant software and AI tools.
After this workshop participants will have:
- been introduced to the main project management stages and what each of these entail;
- used a variety of project management techniques to plan, assess and optimise their project;
- discussed the challenges and risks associated with their project and considered ways to mitigate these risks.
