Ion Shuttling Systems for Scalable QCCD Architectures Based on Surface-Electrode Traps

Abstract:
Since the quantum charge-coupled device (QCCD) architecture was proposed more than two decades ago as a route toward large-scale trapped-ion quantum computing, extensive efforts have been devoted to developing the technologies required for its implementation. In a QCCD processor, ions must be transported between dedicated zones for loading, cooling, quantum gate operations, and state readout. Consequently, reliable ion shuttling is a key enabling technology for scalable architectures.
In this seminar, I will present our recent work on surface-electrode ion traps and associated control systems for QCCD applications. First, I will describe a surface-electrode trap incorporating a through-hole loading structure and discuss sympathetic cooling experiments performed with this device [1]. I will then present ion-shuttling experiments and the hardware developed to support them [2].
A major challenge in scaling QCCD systems is the so-called wiring problem: the need to route signals to an increasingly large number of trap electrodes and to provide the corresponding voltage-control channels. To address this issue, we have developed a time-division-multiplexed digital-to-analog converter (TDM-DAC) system and recently demonstrated ion shuttling using this approach [3]. Finally, I will introduce a packaging technology for multi-electrode surface traps that significantly reduces wiring complexity inside the vacuum chamber.
