Sussex hosted more than 150 alumni from the 1990s on Saturday 20 June. Welcomed to campus by Vice-Chancellor Professor Sasha Roseneil, they heard about the new strategy, Sussex 2035: Creating Progressive Futures - flourishing, sustainability and progress for the whole world, and how we’re supporting students to flourish at Sussex as they had in the 1990s. One alumna described Sussex in the 1990s as ‘wonderfully nurturing.’
Professors Ben Burbridge, Lucy Robinson, and Chris Warne ran an interactive session with alumni exploring their memorabilia from the 1990s. T-shirts from the Students’ Union, High Court papers from a Sussex House sit-in, and a programme from the show West Side Story performed by the Sussex Musical Theatre Society (SMUTS) were all displayed. Unbeknown to the alumnus speaking to Ben and Lucy, the show’s producer and two of the starring cast who played Maria and Chino were in the audience.
Following a barbecue on Fulton lawns, current students provided tours of campus, followed by a group photograph on the steps of the Library. Finally, what reunion would be complete without a beer in Falmer Bar and a 1990s quiz?
It was fantastic to see so many alumni return to campus, with so many great memories; and we received quite a few donations to the Sussex Fund too.
