Understanding what first aid support is available on campus

Faculties and Divisions must ensure that they have a suitable number of Local First Aiders (LFA) trained. LFA can provide support to people in their local work area, or during team activities, who may become injured or fall ill.
The Health, Safety and Wellbeing Team has carried out a first aid needs assessment for the University, based on day-to-day activities and hazards. The assessment details how many standard first aid kits and LFA are required in buildings.
If a Faculty or Division introduces additional hazards to the standard University activity, they will need to carry out their own first aid needs assessment to determine whether additional provision is required.
Day to day, if you need a LFA, you can check out our Local First Aider Register to contact one. Health and Safety Coordinators also display posters in their work areas that list the LFA contact details, so keep an eye out for these too.
If for any reason a LFA isn’t available when you need one, or one has arrived and feels they need more support, then the Mobile First Aid Service (MFAS, formerly known as the Medical Response Team - MRT) can be contacted by calling the Security Team on 01273 873333 and asking for MFAS.
Volunteers who are part of MFAS receive First Aid at Work training in the same way that LFA do. They can provide additional support to LFA if they feel they need it, or provide support where a LFA isn’t available.
By ensuring you call a LFA to support you first, MFAS can be reserved for significant first aid incidents on campus, before handing over to medical professionals.
Thanks to all our LFA and MFAS colleagues for volunteering to support our campus first aid network.
