Windows 10 Extended Security Updates – keep your device secure
Posted on behalf of: IT Services
Last updated: Friday, 3 October 2025

On Tuesday 14 October Microsoft will stop providing automatic updates for Windows 10. Windows 10 remains our operating system of choice and is perfectly fit for purpose.
IT Services are implementing extended security updates from Microsoft to ensure that University laptops and PCs remain secure beyond this date. For most users these updates will be applied automatically, but please read the following guidelines – you might need to contact IT Services, depending on how your device is configured.
- Please do not download or install Windows 11 if you haven’t already done so. This advice applies to all users. Windows 10 is still fit for purpose and more information about Windows 11 will be communicated in due course.
- If you see a message on your PC or laptop notifying you about the upcoming end of support for Windows 10, contact IT Services. Most users will not receive a message but if you do, please follow the steps below:
- Open the IT Support Portal
- Select Request a Service
- Select Windows 10 Security Updates and press Request
- Complete the form, providing your device asset number, device name and Windows Operating system information. Guidance on where to find this information is provided within the form.
- Press Review & Submit
Once your ticket is received, the IT Services team will arrange the necessary steps to ensure your device remains secure and compliant.
Thank you for helping us keep the University systems safe.
