The University of Sussex has formally entered into discussions to join Eastern Arc (Eastern Academic Research Consortium), the regional research consortium that currently comprises the Universities of East Anglia (UEA), Essex and Kent.
Eastern Arc facilitates collaborations, develops a shared, positive and creative research culture, and advocates on behalf of its members and the wider region. It is one of twelve regional consortia across the UK, and Eastern Arc prides itself on its ambition to deliver real and tangible change.
Sussex shares a similar background to the existing members, which were also founded in the 1960s to be a different kind of university. We also share a similar geographic location, as well as complementary research strengths, and the Eastern Arc Board was united in its support for Sussex to join the consortium.
“Sussex is a world-leading research-intensive civic university, and we are delighted that it will be joining us to share the benefits of our collaboration,” said Phil Ward, Director of Eastern Arc.
The University’s Director of Research and Enterprise, Vanessa Cuthill, said: “Eastern Arc is a good fit for the University, both geographically and in its approach to research. I’m very pleased that we have entered formal discussions to join. Being part of a collaborative consortium will help us face the challenges of the region and the future together.”
Professor Keith Jones, Pro-Vice Chancellor Research & Enterprise, added, “Our membership would give us opportunities to work more closely together, share ideas and resources. We are like-minded universities of a similar age so I believe partnerships will come easily.”
Sussex will work with the existing members of Eastern Arc to agree its membership, with the intention that a new memorandum of understanding will be signed by the four Vice-Chancellors early in 2024.
