Peter Mitchell emailed all staff on Monday 6 March to confirm the 2023/2024 pay round is being implemented with effect from 1 February. The new February 2023 salary scale is now available.
The February uplift is a proportion of the pay increase: the second part of the overall uplift will be applied from 1 August 2023. The overall pay uplift being applied to the October 2022 pay scale is shown below and will take effect from 1 August 2023:
Spinal column points |
Overall uplift
|
10 – 14 |
7% |
15 – 25 |
6% |
26 – 51 |
5% |
Changes to our spinal points
Although 8% has been negotiated nationally for the lowest pay spine points (points 3 - 5), the University of Sussex has implemented changes to the grade structure in order to comply with our responsibilities as a Real Living Wage employer. This means that our local salary scale now starts at point 10, which has a 7% uplift applied, tapering down to 5%, as shown above.
UCEA (University and Colleges Employer Association) has instructed institutions to pay a first tranche of the pay uplift in the March payroll, backdated to 1 February as shown below, with the balance (i.e. the difference between the February uplift and the percentage uplifts in the above table) being paid in August:
Spinal Column Points |
February uplift |
10 - 41 |
£1,000 per annum |
42 - 51 |
2% |
Here are some worked examples to help you understand how these increases will be applied:
- A G3.3 (spinal column point 14) salary will increase from £22,662 to £23,662 with effect from 1 February 2023. The salary will then increase to £24,248 (i.e. the remaining balance) with effect from 1 August 2023.
- A G5.3 (spinal column point 23) salary will increase from £28,762 to £29,762 with effect from 1 February 2023. The salary will then increase to £30,487 (i.e. the remaining balance) with effect from 1 August 2023.
- A G8.2 (spinal column point 38) salary will increase from £44,737 to £45,737 with effect from 1 February 2023. The salary will then increase to £46,974 (i.e. the remaining balance) with effect from 1 August 2023.
