Today, 25 June, The Vice Chancellor Adam Tickell wrote to all staff. You can read the full View from the VC below:
Dear colleague,
I expect that you will have seen a message earlier from Denise Holt, the chair of our governing Council, about my decision to leave Sussex at the end of 2021 in order to take up the reins at the University of Birmingham.
When I was first approached about the job at Birmingham, I thought long and hard before putting myself forward. During the five years I’ve been at Sussex, I’ve come to love this University. The people who work here are passionate and committed and there is a stronger sense of identification with their university than I’ve experienced anywhere else I’ve worked.
It has been my privilege to lead Sussex. It is no secret that times haven’t always been easy but during the last five years we have made great strides. I am proud of so many things we have achieved – Sussex 2025, our work on inclusion and dignity and respect, our commitment to vigorous debate, our award-winning pandemic response, our outstanding international reputation, the quality of our research and, of course, our transformative education.
But most of all, I’ve loved getting to know the people of this University. I’m not going to be leaving for another six months, so it is far too soon to reminisce, but barely a week goes by without my becoming aware of ways in which staff members have made a difference to their colleagues, their students, their community or the sum of human knowledge.
Sussex is a truly special university with an illustrious past and a sparkling future. During my remaining time here, I will do everything I can to secure this. In the meantime, thank you all for making the University the amazing place that it is.
With best wishes
Adam
