As part of City Reads 2019, the University of Sussex Library have bought 10 new copies of Brighton’s Big Read novel Let Me Be Like Water by S.K. Perry.
The debut novel by Perry was chosen in February to be this year’s Big Read, an initiative by City Reads and Brighton Festival to promote literature and reading in the city.
Perry has said she was moved by the decision and hopes that her debut will reach a wide array of readers over the next two weeks.
Bookstores and libraries across the city are promoting the novel and the Library is also encouraging students to join in the read and enjoy a myriad of events in between study.
The activities were launched on 23 April with a free World Book Night book swap in Jubilee Library. The celebration spans from 23 April to 12 May and will include a wide range of activities aimed at getting Brighton locals reading and engaging with the book.
Key events will include a literary salon: ’Amongst Friends’, with writer Heidi James on 2 May and a City Reads Supper Club at the Starfish and Coffee. S.K. Perry will also be talking to poet and journalist Bridget Minamore at the City Reads finale on 12 May, live as part of Brighton Festival.
Tickets are available on the City Reads website.
Other events include The City Reads Book Quiz on 25 April, in the Latest Music Bar and The Power of Theme on 30 April at Waterstones. The Power of Theme will invite Bethan Roberts, author of Graceland, and Manbooker nominated Yvette Edwards author of A Cupboard Full of Coats and The Mother to join in a discussion on theme with screenwriter and author Catherine Johnson.
We also encourage students to pick up a copy from the Fiction display in the Library and join in the Big Read.
