To help simplify our digital approach, the University is moving to Microsoft Teams as our single platform for online meetings, communication and collaboration from Friday 4 September.   

From this date, Zoom will no longer be licensed for students and staff,  though you will still be able to join Zoom-hosted teaching sessions and external Zoom meetings as necessary.   

Note: Online teaching sessions are an exception, and these can continue to be hosted in Zoom for now.   

What this means for students  

If you want to host an online meeting from Friday 4 September onwards, you will need to do it in Microsoft Teams.   

From September, Sussex students will still hold a Zoom account but it will become unlicenced. This means:    

• you will still be able to join Zoom meetings as normal and use interactive tools in the meeting - e.g. chat, reactions, whiteboards etc.  
• any online modules currently taught via Zoom will continue as normal and be accessible via Canvas.  
• in person teaching will be unaffected.  

However: 

• you will no longer be able to create or host Zoom meetings with your Sussex zoom account.  
• you will no longer be able to see any additional Zoom tools such as transcription summaries using My Notes (as an alternative read our guidance on using  AI to help to summarize meeting transcriptions) 

Will I be able to use Teams to host meetings?  

• Students will be able to host their own meetings on Teams. Full guidance on how to use Teams is available via the ITS SharePoint site. This includes instructions on how to use captions, transcription, recording, breakout rooms and more.  
• If students need any support with the transition between Zoom and Teams you can contact the ITS Service Desk.
