We consult with academic staff each year to identify future software requirements for student computers on the campus. The final set of applications is then tested and installed to cluster room PCs during the summer vacation.
The principal changes to the software installed on student PCs for 2013-14 were:
The following applications were added to student computers in the summer vacation 2013.
Student PCs continued to use Office 2010 (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint). Internet Explorer was upgraded to version 10 and both Firefox and Chrome were installed as alternative browsers.
We are now delivering specialist engineering software using Application Jukebox. Software provided through Application Jukebox is installed on demand when it is needed and can be kept up to date centrally by IT Services. This enables us to provide software in a more flexible manner and is a move away from the more static PC desktop that historically has been delivered on a yearly basis.
See the full list of current software for details of all applications on student computers.
The operating system on the student iMacs in the Library and Shawcross was upgraded to 10.8 (Mountain Lion). No major items of software were added or removed but Sibelius (music software) was upgraded to version 7. For details of individual applications, see the list of software installed on student Macs.
