IT security update coming 28 February – how to be prepared.

Posted: Wed 21 Feb 2024, 1:00pm.

IT Services will soon be running an important security update on your computer. Global Protect, the staff VPN, will be updated early morning of the 28th February. To ensure this goes as smoothly as possible with little impact on your working day, please make sure your device has the latest updates and you have saved any files when you have finished working for the day.

To ensure that your university-supplied device receives these updates in advance please follow the steps below for your device type:

Windows desktop PC users:

  1. Sign out (press ctrl + alt + delete, then chose ‘Sign Out’).
  2. Leave your computer turned on.
  3. The security updates will apply automatically overnight.
  4. Your computer will then go into sleep mode and you will be able to continue using it again in the morning.

Windows laptop users:

  1. Type “Windows Update” in the search box at the bottom-left of your screen and hit Enter.
  2. On the Windows Update screen, click ‘Check for updates’.
  3. After running the check your computer will either say;
    • Your computer is up to date, or;
    • Updates are waiting to be applied.
  4. If there are updates waiting, save your work and restart your laptop to install the updates.

Apple Mac users:

You will be prompted to apply the update on the 28th February which may require a device restart.

Best practice: always ensure your computer has the latest updates.
