The University has recently appointed Clare Gryce as ITS Deputy Director responsible for Operations and Research in IT Services - reporting to Director of IT, Jason Oliver.
Previously, Clare was the Director of Research IT in the Information Services Division at University College London where she led a growing team of 30 staff delivering a wide range of specialist technology and expert services for the university’s vibrant research community.
Under her leadership, the team successfully embedded research technology within a large and complex IT department, and established new ways to work with researchers to meet their needs.
Clare developed a Research Software Engineering (RSE) capability that’s recognised as being pioneering throughout the sector, and was instrumental in partnering with academic colleagues to win a £3.7m award to develop and host a national High Performance Computing service for Materials Science.
Clare is particularly interested in developing creative, sustainable funding models around research IT, and working with Professional Services colleagues to ensure that researchers benefit from seamless access to the services the needs across the research lifecycle.
Clare said: “I’m thrilled to be joining Sussex at such an exciting time. With adoption of digital and data-intensive methods increasing across all research disciplines, there is a need for new thinking about the role that IT can play.
“I’m looking forward to working with colleagues across campus to build a compelling vision for research IT at Sussex and collaborating to develop a roadmap for delivery.
“I’ve lived in Brighton for more than five years and it’s fantastic be to here in my home county on this beautiful leafy campus.”
Jason Oliver commented: “We’ve come a long way in the development of the new ITS strategy and with Clare’s input, particularly around research I feel very confident that we will be taking Sussex on an exciting new journey.
“We want an IT infrastructure that benefits our whole community - creating a raft of opportunities that may not yet even be realised yet by our students and staff.
“We look forward to working with colleagues across the University to shape and deliver this exciting future.”
