Windows 7 is the latest operating sytem from Microsoft and for most staff at Sussex, will be replacing Windows XP.
Why are we changing? Until recently we have used Windows XP at Sussex but that operating system is now quite old and Microsoft will stop supporting it in the near future. The new version is also more secure and more powerful.
Is there much difference? You will probably notice quite a few changes. There are several new features (see our Getting started booklet for details) and some new programs including more recent versions of Word, Excel and Outlook.
What if I have an old computer? Most current PCs can be upgraded without any problem but if you have an older computer in your office, it's possible that it won't support the new system. The IT Services staff handling the migration will be able to advise you further when they visit.
This is a new service for staff which lets you connect to a Sussex Windows 7 computer and use it remotely as if you were sitting at a PC on the campus.
It allows you to do almost anything you would do at work. For example, you can read or update files, print documents and login to the central database and you can use the service from any PC or Mac and even from an iPad or iPhone.
Student computer clusters and lecture and seminar rooms were upgraded at the start of the Autumn term.
We are about midway through the process of staff over to the new system.

When most staff in the schools have moved over to Windows 7, we will start working on the transfers for staff in the central administration teams.

The new software is quite different to older versions such as Windows XP. There are lots of new and useful features which will help students and staff.
