Promoting your charitable initiatives at Sussex

The BBC Children in Need appeal will soon be drawing near (18 November) and filling the crisp autumn air with the sound of rattling collection buckets.

Sussex staff have always been supportive of charitable causes. To assist them in their efforts a central online space has been created to allow them to promote their individual activities. A group has been created on the University’s Yammer account. Yammer is a social network – like Facebook – but focused on individual organisations. Find out more about Yammer.

Please create your own account using your organizational email address (e.g. sfa21@sussex.ac.uk) and your normal password. The new Yammer group is called ‘Charity initiatives’. If you’d like to find out more about Yammer please email Internal Comms.

Lewes Bonfire Night – important advice and information

Lewes is famous for its Bonfire Night festivities and an annual highlight for many students and staff at the University. However, if you’re planning to go on Saturday 5 November, make sure you stay safe by following advice from the event organisers. You should also be aware of the considerable travel restrictions.

Transport to and from Lewes is expected to be particularly difficult this year because the event falls on a Saturday and because industrial action is expected on the local rail network that day. Note also that tickets for most of the bonfire sites must be purchased in advance; each bonfire site has a limited capacity and may sell out of tickets ahead of 5 November. In addition, the town centre becomes crowded early in the evening; there will be no access to the main procession route when the town centre is full. For more information, see the Lewes District Council website or the Lewes Bonfire Council website. More information.

Cite Them Right - online referencing tool

For the whole of November, the Library is running a trial of 'Cite Them Right'.

This online resource helps you to reference a wide range of sources. It inlcudes some of the most commonly used referencing systems including:

  • Harvard
  • American Psychological Association (APA)
  • Modern Languages Association (MLA)
  • Modern Humanities Research Association (MHRA)
  • Oxford University standard for the citation of legal authorities (OSCOLA)
  • The Vancouver referencing system
  • The Chicago referencing system

More information about the Cite Them Right trial and a link to access the resource can be found on the Library web pages. Library staff would like feedback on this resource. Please use the form on the Library web page to let them know what you think about Cite Them Right.

Trick or treat? with SussexFood and Space with US

In celebration of All Hallows’ Eve and to raise money for both Stand up to Cancer and Children in Need, the SussexFood and Space with US teams came out in force on 31 October.

The event consisted of a Halloween raffle, with prizes donated by suppliers, local businesses, colleagues, friends and family.

Over the course of the day, SussexFood and Space with US managed to raise £700, with more still to come from collection tins around campus. If you didn’t get a chance to donate on the day, look out for the collection boxes around campus in SussexFood cafés and restaurants. More information.
