Barry Wilkinson A.R.C.A.  1923 to 2007

After attending school in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, Barry Wilkinson was in the Royal Air Force from 1942 to 1947. After demobbing he studied at the Royal College of Art gaining a Diploma in Stained Glass, in which he practiced and then taught. Barry switched to graphics, becoming head of department at Wimbledon College of Art, followed by a spell in an animation studio.

In 1961, Barry went free-lance as a designer/illustrator and moved to Sevenoaks. His freelance work began with the design and production of the Regent Street Christmas decorations in London. He then went on to illustrate for the Radio Times, and write and illustrated picture books for Bodley Head and many other children;s books including those published by Puffin and Puffin Pleasure. Barry also illustrated Paddington Bear books for Collins, many Jackanory stories for the BBC, as well as education programmes and books, first day covers and stamp designs for Unicover in the United States.

From an early age Barry was fascinated by films and started his collection which included books and magazines. His interest and knowledge was phenomenal and spanned the whole spectrum. He also had a passion for Jazz, particularly Duke Ellington. He played the clarinet and as a student acted in plays at the Royal College Art and perfected stage makeup for himself and fellow actors. Barry built up collections of printed materials, often used for reference, but included illustrations and advertisements.

Barry lived in Brighton for 27 years. In 2008 Barry’s wife donated his collection of Sight and Sound, Monthly Film Bulletin, Picture Goer and Film Pictorial to the University of Sussex for the interest and enjoyment of others.
