Encourage your students to nominate themselves for Student Rep positions

Nominations are now open for Student Rep positions. There is less than one week left for students to nominate themselves for a Student Rep position. Please encourage your students to nominate themselves for Student Rep positions and get involved in making change happen. Student Reps are a crucial part of the feedback and decision-making processes across the University. The process for students to nominate themselves is easy. Due to issues with logins to the Students' Union website, the deadline for nominations has been extended until 12:00 midday on Tuesday 27 September 2016. Online voting for Student Reps will take place on 28 and 29 September 2016. More information.

Solar-powered campus bins able to devour more waste

Sussex Estates and Facilities (SEF) have invested in a set of solar-powered bins on campus that can swallow up to five times more waste than a normal bin. The eight new Bigbelly bins use the sun’s powerful rays to compact the litter inside, meaning they can stomach loads more rubbish.

The hi-tech bins also use super-smart tracking systems to send text and email messages to SEF when they are full and need emptying. A solar-powered unit takes up roughly the same footprint of an existing bin but runs entirely on the sun's energy and, even in low light, powers a 12-volt battery.

Clean water for the Polireddypeta community thanks to Sussex students and staff

Chartwells and SussexFood, in partnership with Life Water and water charity drop4drop, are delighted to announce that we have successfully funded the installation of a brand-new water well in an Indian community previously living without a source of clean water.

Thanks to all the bottles of water purchased by the students and staff at the University of Sussex, we have been able to make a real difference to those who so desperately needed it. Supplying safe drinking water to communities who would have previously had to travel a long way to find it is a lifesaving cause and we could not be prouder to be involved.

SussexFood are a loyal supporter of Life Water; working with drop4drop they supply clean drinking water to those who do not have access to it. More information.

Sussex academics bring leading experts together for refugee resettlement conference

International experts working on refugee resettlement have come together for the first time at the University of Sussex.

Academics from across the global university sector, along with representatives from the British Refugee Council, Refugee Action, Scottish Refugee Council, the UN Refugee Agency, the International Organisation for Migration, national and local government as well as a good number of refugees themselves, took part in the three day conference, which was held to coincide with the 10th anniversary of a group of Ethiopian refugees resettling in Brighton and Hove.
