Three Minute Thesis (3MT) comes to Sussex

The Doctoral School are challenging doctoral researchers on campus to describe their research within three minutes to a non-specialist audience.

Developed by the University of Queensland, Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an academic competition that celebrates the discoveries made by research students and encourages them to communicate the importance of their research to the broader community.

The Doctoral School are running their first Three Minute Thesis competition, which will provide a series of exciting and stimulating events, and help to raise the profile of the thriving doctoral researcher community on campus.

The competition is open to active doctoral researchers in their second year onwards at Sussex, who have not yet had their final viva at the time of the competition.

Competition entrants will

  • develop their academic, presentation and research communication skills,
  • meet other doctoral researchers from across the University,
  • be part of an initiative showcasing the depth and breadth of doctoral research at Sussex,
  • and have the chance to win a prize (including a first prize of £1,000 towards attendance at an international conference).

The competition is broken down into two stages: cluster-level heats in April 2016 (Arts/humanities; Social Sciences; Sciences), and a University level competition in June 2016.

The top three researcher presentations from the cluster-level heats will be invited to participate in the University-level competition.

To find out more and to enter the competition, see the Doctoral School’s Three Minute Thesis webpage and complete the online form. Email researcher-development@sussex.ac.uk with any queries.

Although first-year doctoral students cannot enter the competition, they are very much encouraged to attend the events to find out more about the doctoral research being undertaken at Sussex, and to help them prepare to take part next year.
