Andrea Cornwall is new Head of Global Studies
Following a competitive international recruitment process, Professor Andrea Cornwall has been appointed as Head of the School of Global Studies.
Professor Cornwall, Professor of Anthropology and Development in Global Studies, has been Acting Head since September, when Professor Richard Black left Sussex to take up a senior post at SOAS, University of London.
The School of Global Studies brings together the disciplines of anthropology, geography and international relations in the study of global issues such as climate change, international migration, international development, conflict and violence, infectious diseases, international security, human rights, and global cultures and religions.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing, chaired the appointment panel. He said: “Andrea has an outstanding international reputation and has a wide range of international connections. These extensive connections will particularly benefit the further development of the School and its global outlook.”
Professor Cornwall said: “With its vibrant blend of disciplines and perspectives, the School of Global Studies addresses some of the most pressing global issues of our times.
“Interdisciplinary, innovative and critical, the School embodies all that is unique about Sussex.
“I’m delighted to have this opportunity to lead and develop the School.”
Trained as a social anthropologist at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, Professor Cornwall joined the Sussex community in 1998 as a Fellow of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), which is based on the Sussex campus.
Since 2006, she has been Director of the multi-country, interdisciplinary Pathways of Women's Empowerment research and communications programme.
She moved from IDS to become a member of academic faculty at Sussex in 2010.
Professor Cornwall took up her permanent appointment as Head of Global Studies on 20 January.
