&        Visit to ‘The Keep’           &

Monday, 16th February, 2–4pm

The Keep, which is just across the road from the University, is purpose built and houses the University’s archives and special collections, the Royal Pavilion & Museums local history collections and the collections of the East Sussex Record Office.  It offers a state-of-the-art service and is recognised as a centre of excellence for conservation and preservation.  We will visit when the building is closed to the general public, so will have the undivided attention of the archivist and other staff and there will be ample time for questions and discussion.  Several Suss-Ex members have expressed an interest in finding out which University records are housed in The Keep.

There is no cafι at The Keep but those wishing to end their visit with tea could either go back on campus or walk through to The Bridge Community Centre, which has a cafι—about 7 minutes walk from The Keep.  More details on how to find The Keep and The Bridge Community Centre will be sent to those booking.

There is a small administrative charge for this visit of £3 per head.  All are welcome!  Please print and complete the form at the end of this Newsletter and return as indicated by 31st January at the latest.

Recent Suss-Ex Events

Christmas Party

The annual buffet lunch for Suss-Ex and USPAS former staff and their guests on Tuesday 16th December was attended by 50 people from Suss-Ex and 117 from USPAS.  We are most grateful to Sue Bullock and Tracey Llewellyn for once again organising this enjoyable event.  Catering this year was by SussexFood, and we thank the University for facilitating that option.

Research contributions by retired staff: 2014

Our policy of recording each year the research contributions made by retired staff continues.  Quite a few Suss-Ex members are, while notionally retired, still active in research, for which some access to university facilities is often required.  Our contributions to the university's research output will continue to be of value under any successor to the REF, but we find that the extent to which, and the manner in which, our needs are met can vary from one part of the university to another, and sometimes as a minority group we may simply get forgotten.  It is, therefore, advantageous to those of us who continue to produce, and wish to maintain our relationship with the research life of the university, for our contributions to be noted.  If you are writing poetry now instead of biochemistry, don’t forget to mention that too!

If, therefore, you have in 2014 taken part in any of the activities listed below, or related ones, please send a list in, with your subject group affiliation:

·         conference papers given, invited talks

·         prizes and honours received

·         new grants gained

·         research students completing

·         officerships in learned societies

·         external examinerships

—even if notification of them has already appeared in the Bulletin.

This should if possible be done by e mail, and sent to j.platt@sussex.ac.uk; all those received will be included in a consolidated list in a forthcoming newsletter.

Suss-Ex: the website and the Committee

More information about Suss-Ex is available on its webpage at http://www.sussex.ac.uk/suss-ex/.  ‘Suss-Ex Club’ in Google will get you there, as will http://tiny.cc/sussex, or you can find us in the A–Z on the University’s homepage.  The website has copies of past Newsletters, and also has a link to http://www.sussex.ac.uk/suss-ex/Obituaries.html, a list of obituaries of deceased colleagues.

Suss-Ex activities are organised by a steering committee, which currently comprises:

Sir Gordon Conway, Chair G.Conway@imperial.ac.uk

Sue Bullock sue.bullock@hotmail.co.uk

Colin Finn colinfinn@btinternet.com

Jackie Fuller jkfuller21@hotmail.com

Charles Goldie c.m.goldie@sussex.ac.uk

Arnold Goldman a.goldman@cowbeech.f9.co.uk

Jennifer Platt J.Platt@sussex.ac.uk

Adrian Peasgood adrian@peasgood.plus.com

David Smith j.d.smith@sussex.ac.uk

Paul Tofts uos@paul-tofts.org.uk

We are always seeking ideas for social occasions when we can meet former colleagues.  Please let us have your suggestions, or volunteer to join the committee.  We meet once a term, when practicable immediately before a Suss-Ex event.
