The ranking, based on the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine’s “international outlook” indicator of its World University Rankings methodology, places Sussex at 61st in the world out of a cohort of 800 universities.

The rankings are based on the proportion of international staff and students at a university as well as the proportion of research papers published with at least one co-author from another country.

Marcus Williams, Director of Student Recruitment, Marketing and International Affairs, said: "It is pleasing that Sussex continues to be recognised as one of the top universities in the world

“This ranking reflects the nature of Sussex as a global institution and demonstrates the internationalism that has been at the heart of the University since our inception.

“We are rightly proud of the contribution our international students and staff make to the quality and diversity of campus life and to our research environment at Sussex.

“The University’s strategic plan strengthens our commitment to internationalisation, and has led to a greater number of partnerships with international institutions for research and teaching - to benefit our students and staff.

“We also continue to expand our international activity in other areas and to undertake initiatives to improve our international outlook.”

Phil Baty, Times Higher Education World University Rankings editor, said: "An institution's global outlook is one of the key markers of a prestigious university.

"The top institutions hire faculty from all over the world, attract students from a global market of top talent and collaborate with leading departments wherever they happen to be based.

"All institutions in this list deserve to celebrate - being named one of the most international universities in the world is a sign of great potential, competitiveness and dynamism."

In total, 28 countries are represented in the Times Higher Education's top 200. Sussex’s position has dipped slightly from 49th position out of 800 to 61st.

The list shows that the UK has almost a third of entries in the top 200 - with 64 institutions listed - while 39 including Sussex make the top 100.

After the UK, Australia has the second highest number of entries, with 24 institutions listed.

The University of Sussex works in partnership with some of the world's leading universities and welcomes students from more than 120 countries. Around 25 per cent of Sussex students come from outside the UK, and the University’s teaching and research faculty includes staff from over 50 countries.
