Research Libraries UK logoResearch Libraries UK (RLUK) announced yesterday (25 June) that Sussex is to become one of only four new members of the organisation, joining 34 other university and research libraries including the British Library.

The Librarian, Kitty Inglis, said: “RLUK represents the leading and most significant research libraries in the UK and Ireland.

“Being part of this group will provide us with opportunities to collaborate with peer institutions on projects and initiatives that will enable us to enhance our collections and services.

Membership of RLUK recognises the high quality of the collections and services already provided by the Sussex Library to students and academics.

“The interesting and innovative work that we deliver on a day-to-day basis in the Library was commended as a strength of our application and provides an excellent basis for future work with RLUK partners,” said Kitty.

"We were very impressed with the quality of the applications we received from libraries wishing to join RLUK," confirmed John MacColl, Chair of RLUK.

"All four of our new member libraries will bring new insights to the challenges we face both institutional and collective, delivering innovative research support services, and refreshing our approaches to the enduring task of building and caring for collections.”

The RLUK, which supports research libraries to share resources among themselves, derives its strength from the shared vision of its members “to ensure that libraries contribute to the advancement of research and scholarship through their outstanding collections and services”.

Kitty said: “Membership of RLUK provides us with opportunities to strengthen our engagement with research and research-led teaching by sharing best practice with other research-focused universities.

“We look forward to contributing to the re-envisioning of the research library in a digital age.”
