Sussex staff and students to celebrate One World Week

Staff and students have teamed up to organise a week of events and activities to celebrate the University’s international outlook and the cultural diversity on campus.

One World Week logoOne World Week takes place on campus from 10 to 16 March and aims to:

  • celebrate the different cultures on the Sussex campus
  • develop an understanding of global issues
  • highlight international opportunities for personal development
  • encourage community engagement
  • develop a sense of global citizenship

Events and activities have been grouped into five different categories

  1. Information and displays
  2. Sports and leisure
  3. Fun and competition
  4. Performance
  5. Talks and debates

The programme is still being finalised, but it will start with a launch event in the Jubilee building at 1pm on Monday 10 March.

Other programme highlights include Chinese dance; Turkish music; international film nights; a performance of the play Henrik’s Feast; a language cafe; Holi celebrations; debates; competitions; a live-music showcase; a One World Party; Zumba and Salsa sessions; and opportunities to find out about working and studying overseas.

Most of the events are to be held in the Jubilee building but there will be other activities across the campus, including in Falmer House, the Meeting House and the Sport Centre.

Martin Hookham, Head of the International Office, has co-ordinated the creation of One World Week at Sussex, working with colleagues from across campus, the Students’ Union, and students in various clubs and societies.

Martin says: “To undertake study at a university can be challenging but to do this thousands of miles from home, often in a different language, is something that I have complete admiration for.

“However, we could do more here. While the University of Sussex has a good reputation for the ease with which people can make friends, we could all reach out a little bit more to ensure that our classmate is included, that our work colleague’s challenges are better understood and that sometimes we stop and listen  to the different perspectives that people hold.

“If through One World Week one more person takes the opportunity to study on one of our exchange programmes or tries something new because of the events that are taking place, that would be a tremendous achievement.”

More information will be posted on the One World Week web pages as plans progress.

The University works in partnership with some of the world's leading universities and welcomes students from more than 120 countries. Around 20 per cent of Sussex students come from outside the UK, and the University’s teaching faculty includes staff from over 50 countries. Sussex encourages its UK students to graduate with a world view, which is why one in seven of its UK undergraduates spend part of their degree overseas.
