Sussex postgraduate applications rise
The number of applications to study postgraduate taught courses at Sussex has risen again this year – with the first reports showing overall applications up by a quarter.
By 1 March 2012, just over 8,100 applications had been received, compared to 6,500 at the same time in 2011.
There has been a continuing shift towards applications coming from overseas students – with a 35% increase in overseas applications to 7,000.
While the total number of home and EU applications has fallen, the number of offers accepted by such students is 6% higher at this point than last year – although this is a relatively early stage in the process.
Rob Evans, Head of Admissions, said: “We are seeing that Sussex continues to be increasingly attractive to students looking to undertake postgraduate education.
“We are working closely with schools across campus to ensure that the decision-making process on applications is handled swiftly and effectively, ensuring that potential students have a positive experience of Sussex from the start.”
Among potential doctoral students there has also been significant growth – with 850 applications received, an increase of 15% compared to 2011.
Unlike taught courses, the biggest increase in applications for postgraduate research has been from home and EU students, with a rise of over 75%.
Paul Roberts of the Doctoral School said: “Increasing the number of postgraduate research students is vital for the future academic health of Sussex.
“This growth in applications reflects the quality of academic supervision at Sussex, our continuing success in winning research studentships and the additional focus that the Doctoral School and Student Recruitment Services have placed on organising and promoting scholarships to potential students.”
