Colleagues in Life Sciences are mourning the death of Dr Lizzie Verrall (née Woods), who died on 15 June.

Lizzie first joined Sussex as an undergraduate on the BSc Molecular Genetics in Biotechnology sandwich programme in 1997, graduating with first class honours in 2001. Her degree included a one-year work placement in the Sussex Innovation Centre on campus.

Lizzie then undertook a PhD at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at University College in London before rejoining Sussex in 2005 as a post-doctoral research fellow in Dr Alison Sinclair's research group in the Biochemistry and Biomedical Science division.

In 1995 Lizzie met and fell in love with Johnnie Verrall. They married in August 2004 and in April 2008 their son Richard was born.

Alison said: "Lizzie's excellent intellectual and practical contributions to research will be sorely missed, as will her zest for life, her fantastic problem-solving abilities, and above all her kindness."
