Three members of the Research Development Team at Sussex will take part in a night-time sponsored walk this month to raise money in remembrance of a colleague who died earlier this year.

Dr Sui-Mee Chan, Laura Shockley and Amelia Wakeford will trek 13.4 miles around Brighton as part of the Martlets Midnight Walk 2010, starting at midnight on Friday 18 June. The three are raising funds for the Martlets Hospice, the Sussex-based charity that helped their colleague Sarah Birchmore, who passed away in March.

Sarah was a popular member of staff and had worked at Sussex from 2004, starting off at SPRU as its administrator before becoming a member of Research & Enterprise in December 2008.

Sui-Mee, Laura and Amelia said: “Sarah was a dynamic and optimistic person - any time spent in her company was guaranteed to be filled with lots of laughter. None of this changed after she was diagnosed with cancer late last year, and it was thanks to Martlets, a fantastic Brighton and Hove charity, that she was able to retain the independence she valued so fiercely.

“They allowed Sarah to have more choices in the way she lived and helped ensure she spent as much time as possible at home, amongst friends and family.”

The Martlets Hospice provides end-of-life care services to adults with life-limiting illness including cancer.
