Sussex signs partnership learning initiative with UNISON

Staff will soon have the opportunity to undertake a learning and personal development programme organised and funded jointly by the University and UNISON.

The programme was officially launched last week, when Vice-Chancellor Professor Alasdair Smith and local UNISON representative Pauline Thorne signed the document of partnership. CCE is providing the programme, in partnership with the Workers' Educational Association.

The Return to Learn initiative is particularly aimed at staff who in the past have had little access to formal training. An information evening will be arranged in late October for staff who are interested in taking the course.

"The University is delighted to support this bold initiative and demonstrate our commitment to personal development of staff at all levels. Staff will be beginning the course during this term and we are optimistic we will soon see benefits in terms of increased self-confidence and enthusiasm for their roles within the University", said Alasdair Smith. Communication and study skills are among the themes addressed during the nine-month programme, which will be delivered via study groups on campus. In addition, course members attend four day schools.

Pauline Thorne described the benefits as twofold: "Return to Learn helps staff members get back into formal study, which can help them at work. The course is also important as a personal development opportunity for those staff members who would like to study because they feel they have missed out first time around."
