In Brief

Gardner Arts Centre Freebies

The Gardner Arts Centre has a whole host of interesting productions coming up this Autumn and readers of the Bulletin will have the opportunity to see some of them for free. Each of the first 10 readers who turn up at the box office waving a copy of the Bulletin will receive one free ticket for the production of their choice from the following on offer:

Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 October: Scarlet Theatre in the world premiere of Seagulls - a new Anglo-Polish theatre collaboration. Starting at 7.45pm.

Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 October: Brighton Theatre Events - Game. Starting at 7.45pm.

Friday 22 October: Volcano Theatre Company in Macbeth - Director's Cut. Starting at 8.00pm.

Saturday 23 October: Mark Lockheart's Scratch Band. Starting at 7.45pm.

The Bolthole

THE BOLTHOLEThe coffee shop located in the basement of the Library building has undergone a major refurbishment during the summer months. Work began on site in August and is expected to be completed early in October.

The new Bolthole will serve an enhanced range of products based on the successful 'Baguette Express' in Bramber House (Refectory). Featured on the menu will be freshly baked baguettes, French savouries, baked potatoes and freshly produced home-made soups.

In addition a newly built Smoker's Annex, in the form of a conservatory, has been added to the Bolthole in response to customer demand.

Re-naming of the Refectory Building

From 1 October 1999 the Refectory Building has been re-named Bramber House. Members of the Estate Committee agreed that the old name was out-dated, particularly for external marketing purposes, and misleading in view of the current variety of uses of the building.

The name Bramber comes from the recent practice of using the former administrative districts ('rapes') of Sussex. Building and directional signs will be changed as soon as possible, and campus maps will be altered at the next printing. (The campus map on USIS includes updates.)

Conference in honour of Claire Duchen

Last month a conference was held in honour of Dr Claire Duchen of the French Subject Group in EURO who has been forced to take early retirement on medical grounds. It was attended by around 40 people, who came to celebrate Claire's professional and personal contributions, as a scholar of post World War II French politics and feminisms, as a women's studies scholar and as a longtime European and African editor of the journal Women's Studies Internal Forum.

News from the Conference Office

Despite a busy conference season and a six-week Open University Summer School, the Conference Office found time to move locations within Bramber House (the Refectory Building) during the summer vacation. The new office is on Level One, next door to the new Senior Common Room, in the former premises of Carlson Wagons Lit Travel Agents. The campus address, telephone and fax numbers and email remain as before.

The Conference Office has also recently established an important partnership with CASA, based in COGS, in order to be able to offer a Conference and Event Organising Service. CASA is a one-stop shop for conference/events organisation and project management, with experience of organising events ranging from small meetings to major academic conferences of over 500 delegates, both on and off campus.

A leaflet describing the various services CASA can provide to conference organisers (whether members of the University or external organisations) is now available from both the Conference Office and CASA. For further details please contact: Medeni Fordham, CASA - Conference Services, COGS. Tel. (67)8448 or email casa@cogs.sussex.ac.uk.

Tax Office

The name of the University's tax office is changing from South 2 (London) District to Portsmouth Maritime. The reference of 815/EU10 will remain the same, as will the address of 7th Floor, Wingfield House, 316 Commercial Road, Portsmouth, PO1 4TF. For more information please contact Margaret Pitches on ext. 3804 or email M.Pitches@sussex.ac.uk.
