Obituary: Keith Wilson

Next Article | Contents

Keith Wilson, who worked as a photographer at Sussex from 1968-2003, died on 16 September.

Keith began his University career at the age of 18 working as a junior technician in the central Photographic Unit.

Within two years of his joining, Keith and the Photographic Unit became part of the newly formed Media Service Unit (MSU) where they allied with such disciplines as TV, film, sound, graphic design and media production.

In 1975 Keith became the Chief Photographer of the University - a position he held until retirement in 2003.

During his time at Sussex Keith photographed many notable figures, such as Vice-Chancellors John Fulton and Asa Briggs along with the second Chancellor of the University, Lord Hartley Shawcross, and the highly respected biologist, Professor John Maynard-Smith.

One of his best pictures was of brothers Richard and David Attenborough together - apparently a very rare occurrence! - as honorary graduands in 1976. Others he photographed at graduation ceremonies included Noel Coward, James Callaghan, Harold Wilson and Edward Heath.

One of Keith's passions was the theatre and he very much enjoyed taking 'front-of-house' photographs for productions staged at the Gardner Arts Centre (soon to be reopened as the Attenborough Centre). These pictures were some of his best work and personal favourites.

Toward the end of Keith's time at the University he moved from taking photographs to teaching others photography, particularly to Sussex undergraduates, CCE adult education students and the Royal Photographic Society - of which he became a member.
