Chartwells supports transferring staff

Catering and conference services staff transferring to the University’s new external partner from 1 September have now all had individual one-to-one meetings with Chartwells colleagues. Training is also well under way.

Chartwells logoSian Griffiths, HR Business Partner for Chartwells, said: “I have been pleased by the positive approach staff are taking towards the transfer. Lots of great ideas are being raised and opportunities being discussed.”

A training plan developed by Chartwells is in place so that all transferring staff get the best preparation and support. Appropriate courses are also being identified following the one-to-one discussions.

Reassurance has also been provided to staff transferring to Chartwells in relation to the protection of core terms and conditions and the pension arrangements that the University has agreed with the trades unions.

New opportunities opened up

A number of key new appointments are in the process of being made, including the Contract Manager and Stores Manager.

Last week a successful recruitment day was held for up to 20 catering assistants, spanning a series of vacancies across campus. “The team saw some great candidates,” said Sian Griffiths, “and 18 job offers have already been made.”

Chartwells is also opening up promotion opportunities for transferring staff. Sous chef Justin Gillam is being promoted to Head Chef for the campus and will be working closely with the Executive Chef, Luca Nervi.

In addition, Chartwells is aiming to create an opportunity for a recent Sussex graduate through the creation of a new marketing and communications role for the Chartwells team on campus.

TUPE consultation

The University continues its information and consultation process with the trades unions under TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations).

The only changes being proposed by Chartwells under TUPE relate to a monthly pay date of the first of the month and starting the annual leave year in April – the dates currently used by Chartwells. Individual one-to-one discussions have already taken place and solutions found if such changes presented concerns for any individual.

Chartwells has also met with the trades unions, resulting in positive discussions.
