Second phase of Northfield is finished
Phase two of the Northfield halls of residence on campus has been completed on time and within budget. Builders started work on the three blocks less than a year ago, in late summer 2011.
Phase one - of 14 blocks - has been home to 777 Sussex students since it was completed in summer 2011.
Charles Dudley, the Director of Residential, Sport and Trading Services, said: “The 180 new rooms are being used over the summer and those who have moved in seem very happy with the accommodation.
“It is a welcome addition that will help to house the expected increase in the number of students joining us this September.”
Andy Barker is Managing Director of contractors Ocon Construction, who have built both phases one and two. He said: “The University has worked hard to protect and enhance this picturesque semi-rural campus with a scheme that delivers both sustainability and a viable habitat for local wildlife.
“The result is a development that answers student requirements, complements its surroundings and respects the local ecosystem.”
Martin Green, Assistant Director (Projects and Development) in Estates, added: “The project has remained on track, with minimal disruption to residents and campus activities, and we are delighted with the result.”
The University has made some amendments to its plans for the third and final phase of Northfield; the proposal is now for about 150 rooms in two rather than three blocks and a decision from Brighton & Hove City Council is expected by the end of July.
