Mask making

Hi! My name is Erin, I am 11 and I go to Ringmer Community College. The mask-making group have young people from different schools in the area. Our name are Eleanor Cartwright, Danny Hay-Gordon, Lucy Turner, Alice Le Hardy, Jack Lusted, Shioban Davis, Dominic Coles, Soo Min Lee, Julia Symonette and Isobel Bruce. Our craft leader is Keetje Steel, who is helped by Andy Pepperell, Sue Whiting, Julie Fowler, Mr and Mrs Boyd and me. Sorry if we have forgotten anyone!

We have had three sessions including one on a Monday evening. The last one will be on the morning of the performance, to finish off any last bits and pieces.

The masks have not been made for every character in the play. Instead, we concentrated on the Cardinals, planets and stars. A wide variety of materials was used, such as cardboard, gummed paper, newspaper, paint, glitter, felt-tips, spray cans, string, sequins and wire.

The masks have been made in different ways to emphasise the characters' features. The Cardinals are various shades of reds and skin tones. The planets and stars are metallic and glittery.

We have worked very hard to make these masks, but it has been great fun too. We have met new people, learnt new skills and told some funny jokes!

I am sure that all of us would really like to do this again, provided that we have more time, as it was a bit hectic.

Good luck to all the performers - break a leg!
