The global COVID-19 pandemic has stunted progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To meet these goals by 2030, concerted and unwavering research efforts to support this agenda must continue in earnest.
Join the next Research with Impact forum on Wednesday 27 May 2021 (2.30 - 4.00 pm). Through the deluge: Forging ahead with research for sustainability will be hosted by the Director of the Sussex Sustainability Research Programme (SSRP) and former Chief Scientist to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Professor Joseph Alcamo. SSRP researchers Dr Ödül Bozkurt, Dr Beth Nicholls and Dr Maximilian Martin will join him for a Q&A session after the presentation.
The Sussex Sustainability Research Programme (SSRP), a partnership between the University of Sussex and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), aims to provide ‘science for the SDGs’ with deep interdisciplinary research collaborations. SSRP research seeks to identify actions to advance multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) simultaneously for effective and efficient implementation of the goals at the local, national and international levels.
Since its inception, the Programme’s research projects have stimulated cross-School collaboration across campus including the University of Sussex Business School, Global Studies, Life Sciences, Law Politics and Sociology, Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Engineering and Informatics, Education and Social Work and Media, Arts and Humanities.
Sustainability continues to be a key priority for the University, with SSRP playing a crucial role for sustainability research impact and reputation. This forum is particularly timely in the light of the University’s new ranking in the Times Higher Education (THE) league table that names Sussex as among the world’s best (and 9th in the UK out of 50 Universities) for delivering on the 17 United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Professor Alcamo said: “Universities should be places where the biggest challenges of the day are confronted. So, it’s fitting that so much of Sussex’s research and teaching tackles the big question, ‘How can the world achieve local and global goals for sustainability over the next decade and beyond?’”
The Research with Impact webinar series is aimed at all researchers, from PhD students and Early Career Researchers, to more experienced researchers wanting to broaden their knowledge.
The events are both informative and informal ways of presenting the latest research news.
