A team of researchers at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) launched the ARC KSS Data Science Hub – an open-access online resource designed to help researchers navigate the complex process of accessing and using routinely collected health and social care data.
Developed as part of a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) ARC Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS) funded project, led by Dr Elizabeth Ford, Associate Professor at BSMS, the Hub aims to break down some of the barriers that researchers frequently encounter when working with this type of data.
Routinely collected health and social care data has enormous potential to improve health outcomes, shape healthcare policy, and ultimately save lives. Yet, despite its value, accessing this data can be challenging. Researchers often face confusing and inconsistent data access processes, with each dataset having its own unique set of requirements, application forms and approval steps.
The Data Science Hub aims to demystify these complex data access pathways, providing detailed resource packs for each dataset. These packs outline what data is available, how to apply for access, training and governance requirements, costs and more, acting as a crucial starting point for research planning.
In addition to the dataset resource packs, the Hub includes beginner-friendly guides on using NHS data, clinical code list development, and curated training materials for researchers at all levels. The site also features regularly updated blogs and news posts covering the latest developments in data science across the UK.
Dr Elizabeth Ford said: “The team at the BSMS and ARC KSS data hub are keen to help researchers all over the region make use of health data to improve our local population health. We welcome enquiries from anyone wanting to find out about datasets and get started with analysis. Please do get in touch so we can point you in the right direction and improve awareness of datasets available locally and nationally”.
The team are working hard with colleagues to tackle complex and frustrating data access request processes. They have made positive steps in changing these processes for researchers requesting access to local datasets through their work with the NHS Kent, Medway and Sussex Secure Data Environment (KMS SDE) team. Together they have established and delivered a streamlined data access request process and a secure and efficient platform for researchers to obtain permission and work with regional health and social care data. The KMS SDE launched earlier this year and has already facilitated important research. Find out more here.
The ARC KSS Data Science Hub is continually growing and welcomes suggestions from users. Researchers can also book a place at one of the team’s fortnightly data hub clinics for personalised advice and support.
