AI for improving Weather Warning Systems: SSRP, SHL Digital, and Sussex AI's joint workshop
Thursday 13 June 13:00 until 16:00
University of Sussex Campus : Terrace Room, Bramber House
Speaker: Julie Weeds, Alice Eldridge, Joseph Alcamo, Filippo Osella, Pedram Rowhani, Martin Todd
Join SSRP, SHL Digital and Sussex AI on 13 June 2024 for an exciting workshop to discuss opportunities to use AI to improve early warning of climate-related extreme events. This workshop will explore the potential for AI to enhance the University of Sussex’s unique “people-centred approach” to weather warning systems that has brought many positive benefits to communities in the Global South. The workshop aims to stimulate collaboration between Sussex researchers at these three Centres of Excellence, with this collaboration to be supported by bids for external financing.
Sussex researchers are already working with fisher communities in South India, in partnership with the National Meteorological Service to develop a more targeted and effective weather forecasting system for low-income fisher folk. In Kenya, they are working with pastoral farmers and weather forecast authorities to deliver improved models for anticipating and preparing for droughts.
While these early warning systems are improvements over their predecessors, they still have great uncertainties that hamper their performance. But recent advances in artificial intelligence and the data sciences have the potential to improve their performance. AI can accelerate learning from large volumes of weather data; it can use spatial pattern recognition for early detection of crop impacts due to climate events; it can help translate the technical language of warnings into a more natural and understandable language. These and other ideas will be discussed at the workshop.
This workshop will be hosted by Professors Joseph Alcamo, Julie Weeds and Alice Eldridge from the three Centres of Excellence and supported by the Research and Enterprise teams as part of the Summer of Research Programme of events.
All researchers interested in this topic are welcome to join.
Refreshments will be included, therefore please register for numbers!
