Sexual Dissidence Research Day
Tuesday 11 June 12:00 until 17:00
University of Sussex Campus : Arts A108
The first annual Sexual Dissidence Research Day will be held in person in Arts A108 from 12-5pm on Tuesday 11 June 2024!
This event is an opportunity to come together with other researchers in LGBTQ+/sexuality/queer and related studies at Sussex to discuss current projects, share plans for research and writing, and air any concerns, problems or questions you might have about what you’re currently working on with a chance to get feedback from scholars in your field and wider community.
Preparation for the event is minimal—just come ready to informally discuss an aspect of your current work for no more than 5 minutes. Have a think about any questions you might have for the group, such as requests for specific reading recommendations, questions about research ethics you’d like feedback on, or indeed any issues that are of importance to your research at the moment.
The order of events will be as follows, though this may be subject to change depending on numbers:
12-1: Welcome, followed by Introductions and Feedback Session 1: each participant will talk to the whole group for up to 5 minutes about their work, followed by suggestions, observations and responses to speaker’s questions from the whole group (5-10 minutes each)
1-2 Lunch break! We’ll provide a nice lunch spread
2-3: Introductions and Feedback Session 2 (same as Session 1 allowing the other half of the day’s participants to share ideas and get feedback from the group)
3-3.30 Coffee and treats break (also provided by SexDiss)
3.30-4.30: Breakout group discussions (breakout groups will be organized by research focus to discuss plans and feedback in more detail)
4.30- 5: Close of research day with group reflections on key takeaways from the day
5: After the Research Day ends, we invite you to join us in the IDS bar to cap off the day.
In order for us to know a) how much lunch to order and b) who should be placed in field-specific breakout groups together, please register by emailing c.jeffries@sussex.ac.uk by end of day on Friday 24 May at the latest. Please also let us know when registering if you have any dietary or access requirements and include a brief sentence or list of key terms summarizing your research areas so we can best allocate you in a break-out group with others in a closely-related research area. As we have limited time on the day, registration for this event is on a first come, first serve basis.
All are welcome—and please feel free to share the details with others at Sussex who might be interested in participating, particularly post-graduate researchers.
Thanks in advance for taking part in what promises to be an exciting day!
