This advanced training is for doctoral researchers who are interested in using oral history methods. Oral history is a deep and dialogical form of interviewing which can enhance historical understanding as well as contributing to cultural organizations and community development. It has been used to promote inter-generational relationships and open up the cultural environment though interactive story-telling, creative uses of memory art and reminiscence programmes.
The training will take you through the cycle of preparation for interview, including ethical review tips; interviewing techniques and pleasures; post-interview processes and challenges. We’ll have time to try exercises and share experiences as well as touch on some of the emerging issues in the field, including AI, environmental oral history and creative methods. Attendees will need to commit to attending the whole day and will receive a certificate of attendance at the end.
If you are not a member of the CHASE consortia, there are a limited number of places available on request.

Supported by the CHASE AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership Cohort Development Fund and the ESRC Doctoral School at the University of Sussex in partnership with the Centre for Life History and Life Writing Research.
This is event will not be catered. Please note that food options may be limited on campus as this event is scheduled in vacation time.
By registering for CHASE training events, you are requesting a place on the training programme or selected sessions that form part of the programme.
You will receive confirmation of your place from the booking platform and a member of the CHASE team or the workshop leader will contact you closer to the time to confirm details of how to attend, any necessary preparation prior to the training, and any other key details. However, if you are registering close to the time of the event, these details will instead be contained inside the platform’s “booking notification” email.
If you are allocated a place and can no longer attend please cancel your place via TicketSource or email training@chase.ac.uk.
CHASE training is free to attend and events are often oversubscribed with a waiting list. Failure to notify us of non-attendance in good time (ideally 5 days before the training event) means your place cannot be reallocated. Repeated failure to notify us of non-attendance may mean that your access to future training is limited.
This training is open to:
CHASE funded doctoral researchers,
Arts and Humanities PGRs at CHASE member institutions,
Staff at CHASE partner organisations
