Dancing Belonging: Fostering belonging through ballet and jazz
Come and join Julie Alltree for a warm and welcoming introduction to dance, combining ballet and jazz!
We will begin with ballet barre, working slowly and sequentially through the basic positions and steps that underpin all ballet moves. We progress to an enjoyable and musical centre practice, using the concepts from the barre and our new awareness of posture, balance and control.
The jazz section of the workshop is dynamic and fresh with across the floor combinations including simple turns and kicks. We work on rhythm and style and build to a traditional jazz dance combination.
This dance session is part of the project Dancing Belonging (DanBel) led by Dr Maria Federica Moscati (School of Law). DanBel combines dance practice sessions with research workshops to foster feelings of belonging among staff and students and enhance research culture through interdisciplinary collaboration across the Faculty of Social Sciences.
…six, seven, eight, everyone can dance!
Please note that no previous experience of ballet is required; you can wear everything makes you comfortable.
Bio:
Julie trained in Yorkshire with Andie Nydza and Dorothy Stevens MBE. She was a late starter to dance, age 15. She received a scholarship from The British Ballet Organisation to train with John Field and Anne Heaton – Former Director and Soloist of The Royal Ballet.
Julie worked as a professional dancer for twenty years performing with dance companies in Europe, Asia, America and New Zealand. She had a long and varied career working on stage, concert arenas, cruise ships and television.
She brings a wealth of live performance experience and a current understanding of the entertainment industry to her teaching.
She has a love of dance and a wish to enable all her students to dance to their personal best and enjoy dance. She is a dedicated, patient and inspirational teacher with a warm and generous teaching style.
