Sir Jonathan Faull has been made Honorary Professor and Fellow of UKTPO within the Business School
Sussex alumnus, Sir Jonathan Faull (Euro 1976), has been made Honorary Professor and Fellow of UKTPO within the Business School. Moving forwards, the Department of Economics and UKTPO hope to work closely with Jonathan on a number of initiatives.
Sir Jonathan graduated from the University of Sussex with a degree in law in 1976, and then proceeded to work with the European Union from 1978 until December 2016. In his final role Jonathan was the European Commission’s most senior British official, formally known as Director General of the Task Force for Strategic Issues related to the UK referendum for the European Commission.
During his career in Europe Jonathan had many distinguished roles at Director-General level, including Director-General for Justice and Home Affairs and the Commission’s Spokesman; Press and Communication (2000-2003); for the Directorate-General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union (2003-2010) and Director-General of Internal Market and Services Directorate-General (2010-2015).
He is also the author of many articles on European law and policy, and co-editor of a leading work on European Competition Law. He is Emeritus Professor of Law at the Free University of Brussels and Visiting Professor the College of Europe (Bruges) and a visiting Honorary Professor at the Dickson Poon School of Law’s Centre for European Law, located within King’s College London.
Jonathan is now Chair of European Public Affairs at the Brunswick Group. He was awarded a knighthood in 2017 for “services to UK relations within the European Union”.
Recently, Jonathan has developed an ongoing relationship with the Development and Alumni Relations Office, taking part in many events run by the University, including being at Sussex Conversations, “The EU Referendum, in or out?” and a guest speaker at the University’s alumni reception in New York. His honorary professorship within the Business School and his associate fellowship at UKTPO has strengthened this connection.
