The University of Sussex and the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) were founded in the 1960s and have renowned traditions for impactful social research, including through collaborations with partner organisations.

Looking forward, we believe we can enhance the impact of our respective institutions by working more closely on social research projects, where we have a common interest, and through greater utilisation of staff resources and infrastructure.

We have therefore agreed to work in partnership between 1 October 2018 and the end of June 2020 to test the boundaries of such enhanced collaboration and have nominated Professor Gordon Harold (Sussex) and Nancy Kelley (Deputy Chief Executive, NatCen) as co-ordinators.

Current areas of common interest have been initially identified, including social policy, education, health and social care, research methods, economics, family and community processes, trials and evaluations.

We are also encouraging our staff to utilise the considerable capacity we have at our joint disposal, to better exploit both our synergies and our differences, for example, NatCen’s data collection capability and the University of Sussex’s international networks, and to widen horizons and the scale of projects we can undertake together.

This is a non-exclusive arrangement and our wide range of partnerships across numerous organisations, including many universities, will continue and be built upon.
